Peter McDermott

BA (Hons) MA


Peter McDermott is a lecturer in drama at DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama and a freelance director. He is originally from New York, where he trained in the Meisner technique of acting. His MA in Drama from University of Essex entailed directing a series of Beckett’s shorter plays at the Lakeside Theatre in Colchester. Since moving to Ireland in 1991, he has directed theatre in independent venues such as Smock Alley Theatre, Andrew’s Lane Theatre, Project Arts Centre, City Arts Centre and Bewley’s Café Theatre. He has also conducted research in drama in Trinity College Dublin, where he taught before his appointment to the Conservatory.

His work in the Conservatory comprises teaching the Meisner acting technique; student-led devising (both theatre and short films); Irish, British and American theatre and drama; and the study of performance in historical contexts. For BA in Drama final-year showcase productions, Peter has directed Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales, Brecht and Weill’s The Threepenny Opera and Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. He was awarded a 2014 Teaching Fellowship in conjunction with his development of student-devised short film projects and he recently co-directed Terminal One, a devised performance with a cast of students from DIT and Columbia College Chicago, performed in Dublin and Chicago.

Peter has always embraced the practical, educational and academic sides of drama, delivering practical workshops, lectures and presentations in University College Dublin, Dublin City University, University College London, Columbia College Chicago, the Escola Superior de Musica e Artes do Espectaculo (Porto, Portugal), the China-Europe Performing Arts Symposium (Beijing), the European League of Institutes for the Arts Teachers’ Academy (Portugal) and the International University Theatre Association (Liege, Belgium).
