Mary Lennon photo for staff pageMary Lennon is a graduate of University College Dublin, Trinity College Dublin and the University of London Institute of Education. She studied piano with Frank Heneghan at the College of Music, Dublin and with Christopher Elton in London and participated in many masterclasses with teachers such as Bela Siki, John Ogden, Jacques Rouvier, Ruth Laredo, Frantisek Rauch and Ivan Klansky. She performed as solo recitalist and accompanist, has broadcast for RTE radio, was a finalist in the RTE ‘Young Musician of the Future’ competition and was a major prizewinner at all of the major national Irish music festivals where her many successes included the coveted Morris Grant Bursary  at Feis Ceoil, Dublin and the Player Wills Bursary at Sligo Feis Ceoil. 

As a piano teacher and former Head of Keyboard Studies, Mary has enjoyed teaching a wide range of students, many of whom have also been prizewinners in competitions and music festivals and some of whom now have successful careers in music. Mary also has wide experience in the areas of masterclasses, workshops and adjudicating and regularly acts as extern examiner from grade examination to PhD level. She is a founder member and former Chairperson of EPTA Ireland (European Piano Teachers’ Association) and has played an active role in the association both nationally and internationally.  She is also a member of Feis Ceoil and was for many years a member of the Feis Ceoil Executive Committee and the Piano Sub-committee.

Mary’s research interests include piano pedagogy, instrumental teacher education and practice-based research and, in addition to her involvement in instrumental/vocal teacher education, she also acts as supervisor for postgraduate research in music education.  She has lectured and published on these subjects and regularly presents papers at national and international conferences (e.g. ISME, ELIA, EPTA, SEMPRE, ISM, CIC, SMI, RIME, AEC).  She has also contributed to The Encyclopedia of Music in Ireland. Mary was a member of the AEC (European Association of Conservatoires) ERASMUS funded Polifonia Working Group on Instrumental/Vocal Teacher Education (2007-2010) and a founder member of the ISME (International Society for Music Education) Forum for Instrumental and Vocal Teaching. She has recently been invited to be a member of the AEC Polifonia Working Group on Assessment (2012-2015).  She is a member of ISME, SMI (Society for Musicology in Ireland) and SMEI (Society for Music Education in Ireland).
