This course introduces students with technical proficiency on their instrument/voice to the concept of jazz improvisation and performance.  Students will be taught in an ensemble format, with an emphasis on self-directed preparation.  Subjects covered include: 

  • Jazz Ear Training
  • Jazz Harmony & Theory
  • Improvisation
  • Rhythm
  • Jazz Standard Songs
  • Transcription
  • Analysts of Solos
  • History of Jazz
  • Performance
  • Composition
  • Jazz Technique (general)

Learning Outcomes
On completion of the course students will have:

  • A knowledge and understanding of the practical application of jazz harmony and theory, improvisation and jazz techniques.
  • A knowledge of the broad periods of the history of jazz and appropriate repertoire.
  • A competency in performing selected jazz standards within ensemble settings.
  • A competency in performing as part of an ensemble and understanding of the role of the students’ instrument/voice within a ensemble context

On completion of the course, students will receive 5 ECTS at NFQ Level 6.

Day/Time: Thursdays 6-8pm
Duration: 12 weeks, Thursday 7 February - Thursday 9 May inclusive
(no classes on Thursday 28 March and Thursday 4 April)
