Vocal, Opera and Drama Studies

The Department of Vocal, Opera and Drama Studies has earned an enviable reputation as an international centre of excellence for singers and actors. We are continually renewing and reviewing our provision and our commitment to excellence in training students for Opera, Theatre and the Concert platform. Through the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, staff maintain a high level of contact with students on a weekly basis through individual tuition, rehearsals with a designated repetiteur, language coaching, lecture/workshops and drama studies.

The Conservatory has forged strong links with international opera studios and companies throughout the world. All of our students directly benefit from the immediate connections our staff and past students have secured for us in the professional world of opera.

Recent graduates include Orla Boylan, Sinéad Campbell, Paula Murrihy, Aylish Tynan, Lawrence Thackeray and Jennifer Davis. They have joined previous graduates, Ann Murray, Suzanne Murphy, Regina Nathan, Patricia Bardon and Alison Browner, among others, in productions at Covent Garden, English National Opera, Opera Ireland, Opera Theatre Company, Wexford Festival Opera, New York City Opera, Savoy Opera, Garsington Festival and at Opera Houses throughout Europe and North America, Dublin Theatre Festival and Fringe, Edinburgh Festival and RTÉ Television and Radio.

There are opportunities for students to perform in full-scale productions of operas and plays as well as in-house scenes and excerpts.  Recent Opera and Drama productions include Magic Flute, Orpheus in the Underworld, Britten's Turn of the Screw, The Crucible, The Threepenny Opera and Romeo and Juliet.  Masterclasses with visiting lecturers, including Dennis O Neill, Alison Browner, Donald Maxwell and Barry McGovern take place on a regular basis.
